Task 1-A3. A sample learning activity using technology for formative and summative assessments.

Updated: Oct 12, 2020

In this sample lesson, students will be learning about what it means to be a good digital citizen. By the end of the lesson, students will demonstrate via formative and summative assessments that they have competency in working with others in their school, community, and at home, as it relates to Internet communications.

This activity directly aligns with the ISTE Standard for Students #2 - Digital Citizen: Recognizing rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living and working in a digital world.

First, the teacher will have a general discussion with all of the students as a group. The question posed will be: "What does it mean to be a good digital citizen at school, in the community, or at home?" Students will answer and the teacher will record the responses on the SMARTboard.

Next, the teacher will play a Brainpop video that talks about digital etiquette.

After the video, students will discuss as a group some questions supplied by the teacher. This exercise will serve as a formative assessment for the teacher, so that he/she may gauge where the student comprehension of the topic is. The feedback from this formative assessment will help the teacher decide if the lesson has been a success, or if some reteaching will be needed.

Finally, as a summative assessment, the students will be tasked with creating a poster that will teach others about being digital citizens. The poster should include information related to the following questions:

- What do good digital citizens SAY?

- What do good digital citizens DO?

- How do good digital citizens ACT?

Students will present their final poster to the class for discussion. (Erica L., n.d.) As a fun and engaging way to end the lesson, the teacher will play a game of Kahoot! that was pre-loaded with questions reviewing the topic of digital citizenship. Along with the other assessments, the teacher will be able to determine if the lesson's goals and objectives were met. The student data and feedback, which will be collected through the Kahoot! app, will serve the teacher in planning for other current or future classes.
